Medication Management

Medication management can improve medication adherence, reduce side effects, reduce the risk of relapse, and improve overall health outcomes. It’s an important part of treatment for people with mental health and substance use disorders.

How medication management works

At Rosecrance, each client is cared for by a team of specialists who have committed their careers to supporting the unique needs of people living with mental health and substance use disorders.

Together, the team designs an individualized treatment plan that may include medication management for symptoms related to mental health and substance use. That can take place at the residential and outpatient treatment levels, and for clients of all ages—youth, adolescents, teens, young adults, and adults.

Rosecrance providers such as psychiatrists and nurse practitioners play a crucial role in medication management. That role includes comprehensive assessments to understand an individual’s medical history and symptoms, collaborating with an individual’s medical team like a primary care provider or therapist, and monitoring medication use for side effects and adjusting medications as needed.

Medication management is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s a collaborative process that requires open communication and trust between you and your provider.

Medication Management for Youth and Adolescents

Rosecrance offers a comprehensive care continuum for youth and teens that includes medication management at our residential and outpatient locations.

Medication can help manage symptoms related to depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. These medications are prescribed by and monitored closely by our medical team, and can improve daily life—focus, emotional regulation, and self-esteem—for children.

The Role of Psychiatric Services in Your Recovery

When you reach out to Rosecrance, a thorough screening and assessment will be done to evaluate how we can best help you. The next step is to create a treatment plan that is special and individual to your needs. That treatment plan may include a recommendation to meet with a psychiatrist, physician, or nurse practitioner to help treat symptoms and challenges related to mental health and substance use disorders. Including psychiatric services and medication management in your treatment plan can improve your quality of life and contribute to your long-term recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Medication management is a common, essential, and lifesaving part of treatment for many types of mental health and substance use disorders. Mental health medications fall into several categories, including antidepressants, SSRIs, anti-anxiety drugs, stimulants, and mood stabilizers. These medications can help manage symptoms related to depression, anxiety, panic disorders, bipolar disorder, and much more. Medication-assisted recovery (MAR) or medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based treatment that can help manage cravings connected to substance use disorders. Medication management at Rosecrance can improve a person’s quality of life and support relapse prevention as part of an individualized treatment plan.

  • Medication management at Rosecrance is led by our medical team, including psychiatrists, family physicians, and advanced nurse practitioners who are licensed, credentialed, and experienced in treating mental health and addiction.

  • Medication management and psychiatric services at Rosecrance are closely linked. If you are seeking medication, a thorough medical and psychiatric evaluation will happen first to help us create your individualized treatment plan. Once prescribed, medication management will be overseen by our medical team, which includes psychiatrists and advanced psychiatric nurse practitioners. Both medication management and psychiatric services are available in residential and outpatient care settings.

  • Yes, Rosecrance can provide medication management if you are already seeing a therapist or primary care doctor. Our medical team would need to coordinate with your therapist and/or doctor on any treatment plan involving medications. Clients are not required to have a primary care doctor to start medication management, but having a primary care doctor is strongly recommended and Rosecrance can help connect individuals with medical resources in their community. It is also common that therapy and counseling will be recommended before starting medication.

  • Treatment plans involving medication management are tailored to a person’s individual needs based on a thorough medical and psychiatric evaluation. Once prescribed, medications are closely monitored for effectiveness and side effects for several weeks. Minor side effects such as headaches and nausea will lessen or end once your body gets used to the medication. A check-in schedule will be established with your medical team to continue monitoring medications, and it is common for medications to be adjusted or different medications to be tried depending on how your body tolerates and respond to them.
