Intensive Outpatient Program
Intensive Outpatient Program
Rosecrance’s intensive outpatient program (IOP) is structured outpatient care where clients receive evidence-based treatment for substance use, mental health, and eating disorders weekly and monthly. There are varying levels of IOP care that are individualized for a client’s specific needs where they can step down, have new opportunities for education and connection, and meet less frequently as they make progress in their recovery journeys.
How an intensive outpatient program (IOP) works
Moving throughout the intensive outpatient program (IOP) continuum of care provides the structured support clients need for strong, lasting recovery. IOP may be particularly helpful for individuals stepping down from residential treatment as well as for those who need more support.
IOP includes individualized treatment for substance use, mental health, and eating disorders with group and individual counseling, educational sessions and special topic groups, and planning for relapse prevention.
Rosecrance offers IOP for adolescents and adults at most of our locations in person and virtually in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Common IOP schedules include group counseling for nine hours per week for eight to 10 weeks, with stepdown options that meet for about five hours weekly for four weeks, and then individualized continuing care. Additional education is provided to prevent substance use, address symptoms of anxiety and depression, avoid triggers, build connections in recovery, promote family support, and learn about/attend 12-Step meetings.
Some of our programming includes care for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, incorporating treatment methods such as dialectal behavioral therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that help with emotional regulation.
Rosecrance Therapies’ 12-week IOP for eating disorders is led by two Rosecrance clinicians and a registered dietitian, and combines group therapy, individual therapy, family involvement, nutrition counseling and meal support, and medical/psychiatric monitoring.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured level of care that provides more support than traditional outpatient therapy while allowing you to live at home. IOP includes several hours of therapy each week, such as group counseling, individual therapy, and skill-building. It helps individuals address substance use, mental health, or co-occurring disorders. The goal is to build coping skills and support long-term recovery while maintaining daily responsibilities.
-
IOP is ideal for adolescents and adults who need more support than weekly therapy but do not require 24/7 care. It’s often a good fit for those stepping down from residential treatment or those experiencing challenges with substance use or mental health. Individuals who can safely live at home while participating in structured treatment may benefit most. IOP helps people strengthen recovery while staying connected to their daily lives.
-
The length of IOP varies based on individual needs, progress, and treatment goals. Most programs last several weeks to a few months. Participants typically attend multiple sessions per week at the beginning and may reduce frequency over time. Your care team will recommend a schedule that supports your recovery.
-
Yes. IOP is designed to provide intensive support while allowing you to continue working, attending school, or caring for your family. Sessions are often offered during the day or evening for flexibility. This allows you to practice recovery skills in real-life situations. Many people find this balance helpful for long-term success.
-
Traditional outpatient treatment such as individual therapy usually involves one therapy session per week or month, depending on individual needs. IOP includes multiple therapy sessions each week and provides a higher level of support. It often includes group therapy, individual counseling, and recovery education. IOP helps individuals who need more structure while still living at home.
