Community Impact

From crisis care to community cornerstone

Honoring Benita Rollins-Gay is also celebrating the lives she has strengthened, the hope she has restored, and the enduring example she continues to set for us all.

Benita Rollins-Gay has long been a steady source of strength and compassion in Champaign-Urbana.

As the mobile crisis services coordinator at Rosecrance Walnut, she stands beside individuals and families during some of their most vulnerable moments, offering calm guidance, hope, and care when it is needed most.

Yet those who know Benita, and there are many, understand that her impact stretches far beyond her professional title.

For decades, she has answered the call to serve — as an educator, mentor, social worker, advocate, and volunteer. In classrooms, community centers, and neighborhood meetings, Benita has shown up again and again with wisdom, empathy, and a belief in people’s potential. Generations of residents have felt her encouragement, leaned on her counsel, and been strengthened by her example.

This week, that lifelong dedication was honored in a way as lasting as her legacy. The Champaign City Council unanimously approved the renaming of a portion of North Walnut Street, just outside of Rosecrance Walnut, in her honor.

Rollins-Gay Way is a visible and permanent tribute to a woman whose influence can be felt throughout the city.

The newly named street represents a community’s deep respect and heartfelt appreciation. It tells every passerby that service matters, that leadership rooted in compassion leaves a mark, and that one person’s commitment can uplift an entire city.
