Staying strong in recovery during Game Day
Educational Resources
Game Day gatherings can bring up all types of emotions…
In the past, the excitement of a big game often led to a night filled with excessive drinking and rowdy celebrations, whether at a bar or a friend’s home. Amid the fun, however, inevitable consequences loomed—waking up the next morning disoriented, with the details of the night shrouded in confusion. You might not even remember whether your team won or lost, and a weight of regret settled heavily in your chest. Feelings of guilt and shame would follow: “How could I have behaved that way? I’m never going to do that again.”
Recovery is bigger than one game
In recovery, it’s easy to put enormous pressure on a single event, especially one as hyped as the Big Game. But just like a football season, one game never defines the entire journey. Wins are built over time through preparation, consistency, and staying committed to the long-term goal.
Choosing recovery isn’t about missing out on fun or excitement. It’s about gaining clarity instead of chaos, connection instead of regret, and peace instead of shame. When alcohol or substances are removed from the equation, you get to fully experience the moment, remember the plays, the conversations, the laughter, and how you felt the next day
You can still experience the thrill of the game without those negative consequences. Major events like Game Day are packed with excitement, but just like the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, every team steps onto the field with a game plan in mind. So, why not channel that same energy into a more positive experience?
Let’s approach our own challenges with strategy and determination!
-
Be the quarterback
Create a comprehensive strategy to conquer the big game ahead. Gear yourself with a determined mindset focused on achieving victory and be prepared to go to any lengths necessary to triumph over the challenges posed by alcohol and substances. Visualize success, and commit fully to the journey, knowing that each choice you make today is a step toward a brighter, healthier future.
-
Defense. Defense. Defense! Build your line!
Tackle the diverse world of 12-Step programs. If you’re struggling with alcohol, you might find a supportive environment in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). For those facing challenges with narcotics, Narcotics Anonymous (NA) offers understanding and guidance. Marijuana Anonymous (MA) provides a space for individuals dealing with marijuana-related issues, while Cocaine Anonymous (CA) is dedicated to those seeking help with cocaine addiction.
In major cities like Chicago, a vibrant recovery community can be found, and groups like Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are plentiful and easily accessible. These gatherings create a welcoming atmosphere where individuals from various backgrounds can share their experiences and find strength in unity. Knowing these resources exist can help you feel hopeful and supported in your recovery journey.
-
Go through the playbook with your coach/sponsor
Before the big day arrives, take some time to chat with your sponsor about your upcoming game plans. They have the experience to get you to the end zone, especially if they’ve attended a Big Game party before! Tap into their wisdom and see how they navigated their first experience. Their insights can empower you and help shape your approach, ensuring you make the most out of the festivities. Don’t hesitate—reach out and gain some valuable coaching before kick-off.
-
Focus on the End Zone
Now that you’ve geared up like a true champion, it’s time to step into the day with a winning mindset. If you want to make any assists, think of ways you can be of service to others during the gathering. Whether it’s keeping things tidy, taking out the trash, or boosting the energy in the room, every little effort helps keep you from fumbling.
Get ready to cheer on your favorite team, soak in the electrifying atmosphere, and most importantly, believe in yourself! With your solid game plan and a positive attitude, you’re bound to stay in the action and score a touchdown.
What to do if you feel overwhelmed mid-game
Even with the best game plan, cravings or emotions can show up unexpectedly. The key is knowing what to do in the moment so overwhelm doesn’t turn into a relapse. Prepare specific coping strategies, like having a non-alcoholic drink in hand or a quick mental reminder of your reasons for sobriety, to help you stay grounded when temptation strikes.
-
Take a time-out.
If the environment starts to feel too loud, tempting, or intense, step outside or move to a quieter space. A few minutes away from the crowd, the TV, or the drinks can help reset your nervous system and give you perspective.
2. Reach out for backup.
You don’t have to handle cravings alone. Text or call a sponsor, recovery friend, or trusted support person. Even a brief check-in can remind you why you chose recovery and help interrupt the urge before it grows stronger.
-
Ground yourself in the present.
Cravings often come with racing thoughts or heightened emotions. Simple grounding techniques can bring your body back into balance:
- Take slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth.
- Name five things you can see, four you can feel, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste.
- Place your feet firmly on the ground and remind yourself: This feeling will pass.
Cravings peak and fade, often within minutes. By using these recovery tools in real time, you give yourself the chance to stay in control, protect your sobriety, and return to the game feeling stronger and more confident.
Remember: stepping away, asking for help, or using coping skills is smart recovery.
Winning beyond Game Day
A sober lifestyle is built one decision at a time. Planning ahead, leaning on support, and staying focused on what truly matters strengthens your recovery far beyond a single game day. Whether your team wins or loses, showing up for yourself is always a victory.
The greatest gift you can give yourself, your family, and friends during the Big Game is recovery!
