Rosecrance for the first time will host a 5K walk/run this summer that will be open to the public as the organization celebrates its 100th anniversary and works to promote healthy living in the community. Those interested in attending can register at rosecrance.org/recovery5K.

The Rosecrance Recovery 5K Walk/Run with the theme “Every Step Counts” takes place Sunday, Aug. 7. The start time is 7 a.m., and the event will start and finish at the Rosecrance Berry Campus, 8616 Northern Ave., Rockford.

The event celebrates recovery and Rosecrance’s 100 years of changing lives. Proceeds will support Rosecrance programs and the families who seek treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders.

A committee of Rosecrance employees and community volunteers has been busy since last year coordinating the recovery 5K. The committee is co-chaired by volunteer Carol Schuster and Carlene Cardosi, assistant administrator of the Rosecrance Harrison Campus. The group is excited to include the community in a recovery-focused and healthy activity.

“The journey starts with just one step,” Cardosi said. “That phrase not only encompasses the concept of recovery but also the idea of starting something new. I think of how Rosecrance started as an orphanage 100 years ago and now, because of that first step, we touch thousands of lives each year.

“This 5K puts the spotlight on recovery, and we hope it encourages and inspires our clients, our staff and our community.”

Advance registration for the event is $25 for adults and $10 for children ages 17 and younger. Day-of-race entry fees are $30 for adults and the same advance price for children. All participants will receive a medal, T-shirt, goodie bag and refreshments at the end of the race. Awards also will be given to age group winners.
