The Alumni & Family Game Night was a big hit!

It may have been cold outside, but there was lots of enjoyment and laughter inside the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus at the Alumni and Family Game Night.

Event attendees were a mix of alumni and family members from several sites, including our Crystal Lake IOP. Participants enjoyed several games, including foosball, chess, children's bowling, The Walking Dead and playing cards. "Game night was great and I loved the way it was organized," said Jess P. (Crystal Lake IOP) Jess enjoyed herself and she is excited about having similar events in the Crystal Lake area.

Alumni family members Jess & Lyric helped set up and stayed to play! Crystal Lake alumna Jess P. and her husband Brandon caught up with another alumna, Amanda P. (RHC)
Dewan, son of alumna Dana P. (RHC/GD) enjoyed an exciting game of bowling.

David Eigenberg to speak with Rosecrance alumni and family members

Plans are in the making for a spring luncheon with David Eigenberg, star of "Chicago Fire" and "Sex in the City." David has graciously offered to bring inspiration to the Rosecrance Alumni members.

Rosecrance alumna Becky F. (RHC) is working diligently to get this event and other alumni activities together for the Naperville alumni. Look for further information on this event and all alumni happenings at Rosecrance.org, Facebook, Twitter and in our monthly newsletter.

Elections for the Rockford Alumni Advisory Committee

Alumni and family members are encouraged to participate in elections for the Rockford Alumni Advisory Committee membership on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Rosecrance Griffin Williamson campus. The committee meeting will begin at 6 pm and persons interested can contact Missy Garrison, Alumni Coordinator or come to the meeting for more information.

Committee members make a commitment to provide their time and service for one year, while helping strengthen the alumni program. This meeting will determine committee positions, including chairperson, secretary, events, membership and family chair. Any alumni who have completed inpatient and outpatient treatment may hold an advisory committee chair position. Outpatient clients are welcome to help out with the events and subcommittees. We encourage family members to join as well; they have been an integral part of the advisory committee this year, and we hope to see more family involvement.

Living Life on Life's Terms with 12 Steps

by Shivani K.

Step 2: Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity

Step two introduces the spiritual aspect of the program. For some, this is no big deal because they have followed and believed in a Higher Power their entire lives. For others, it is not so easy. Let's get one thing straight right off the bat: nowhere in the book of Alcoholics Anonymous does it specify a Higher Power. There is no mention of Christ, Buddha, Allah, Krishna, or any other named manifestations of God. In fact, the text enforces that a Higher Power is entirely that of one's own understanding.

Shivani K.

Step two was a bit difficult for me. See, my mother comes from a small predominantly Christian town in southern Illinois, and my father comes from a Hindu background having lived in India until the age of 17. As children, my parents instilled in my sister and me the teachings of both Hinduism and Christianity. We frequently went to church and visited the temple, spent time doing activities immersed in both cultures, and we celebrated both religions' holidays. As we got older, our religious preference became more of our own decision. I decided to go with neither religion and in doing so, had very little faith in any type of Higher Power.

But then a strange thing happened. Two nights before I went to treatment at Rosecrance I was faced with my mother's question, “What are we going to do about this?” Now, I can say with 100% certainty that the words that came out of my mouth next were not my own. I did not say them. Rather, someone or something spoke through me as I said, “I don’t know. I can’t stop. I think I need help." I didn’t know it then, but that was my Higher Power speaking through me when I was unable to do it for myself.

After a few months having been sober, I realized that God as I understood Him had been a part of my life since the very day I was born and had not left my side since. It sounds funny to someone who has never had a faith of their own, but it is so rewarding and relieving to finally find power in something beyond yourself. We, as humans, are basically the ants of the world, so small and insignificant, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of other organisms, forms of life, forces of nature, and ways of the world.

So if you can, for even just a moment, close your eyes and think of all the beauty that surrounds you and just how incapable you are to create, alter, and in some cases destroy that beauty, surely you can see that there is something in this world beyond us. Now, at last, just believe. After all, simply believing is all this step asks of you. The rest comes next.
Alumni members give back to Rosecrance adolescent clients

“Being an RGW Alumni, it was great to go
back to where my recovery seed was planted. The clients help us just as much as we help them.”
- Karina D.

The Rosecrance Griffin Williamson campus hosted a 2nd AA Marathon Meeting on February 16, 2015 for the adolescent clients. Every meeting was chaired by Rosecrance alumni members, from both the Griffin Williamson and Harrison Campus.

Kyle D. (RHC Alumnus) prepares to chair
a meeting for the clients at RGW campus.

Several alumni involved have shared how working with the younger clients takes them back to their own youth. Kyle R. (RHC alumnus) was one of them. He said, “I saw myself in every one of the kids at one point in my journey, which I was grateful for and frightened by at the same time. We all go through the same struggles.” The marathon meetings will continue during non-school days for the Griffin Williamson campus.
