Addiction Professional recently honored Rosecrance’s young adult substance abuse treatment services with a 2016 Outstanding Clinical Care Award.
The awards honor clinical programs that effectively deliver addiction treatment to underserved or challenging populations. The other winners were the University of California San Diego’s co-occurring disorders treatment program and Vinland Center’s substance abuse services for patients with brain injuries.
“This year’s Outstanding Clinical Care Award winners demonstrate innovation and their deep commitment to reaching distinct patient populations,” says Addiction Professional Editor Gary Enos. “We received dozens of excellent nominations, reflecting the quality and dedication of the clinicians and organizations that deliver care to those with addiction disorders.”
Rosecrance’s specialized programming allows young adults struggling with substance abuse the opportunity to heal, mature and become grounded in recovery as they progress toward a successful and drug-free future. The 94-bed Rosecrance Harrison Campus in Rockford offers a 16-bed unit specifically for young adult men. In addition, the campus has a 12-bed opiate-specific unit that is typically filled with clients between the ages of 18 and 30.
Treatment is intensive: Young adults attend group sessions focused on life skills, setting boundaries and learning how to be independent and make their own decisions. Care is medically monitored to assist in the safe withdrawal from drugs and alcohol, psychiatric evaluation and treatment is delivered based on individual needs, and clients start working the 12 steps shortly after arriving for treatment. There’s also a large focus on evidence-based experiential therapies such as art, music and wellness to help teach or re-teach good habits to replace addictive behaviors. Parents and family members are taught many of the same skills, and younger clients are encouraged to move into sober-living housing after inpatient treatment because it offers a structured, supportive environment.
This summer, the organization opened Rosecrance Lakeview, an outpatient counseling center and recovery residence in Chicago that specializes in helping young adults. Rosecrance also offers intensive outpatient services for young adults at several of its satellite locations to make programs further accessible when they are needed the most.
Janis Waddell, Rosecrance’s senior vice president of marketing, accepted the Outstanding Clinical Care Award last month during the National Conference on Addiction Disorders in Denver.
